This earth that has ancient origins, was called by the Greeks Promontorium Minervae, for the presence of the temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva; moreover, it is sure, but not jet localized, the famous temple dedicated to the cult of the Sirens, so as described from the historians Plinio, Strabone and Aristotle.
Nerano must with much probability its name to Tiberio Nero roman emperor, that chose it like its preferred summery residence. From the blue island, the emperor moved himself with his ships on the coast, and was hit from the beauty of Marina of the Cantone, and decided to construct an ulterior villa. From the name of the empeor comes “neronianum” and therefore, the today's Nerano. In the course of the centuries, the village of Nerano, than originally was a country house, has beard the controversies historical events of the peninsula sorrentina, between which the cruel and devastating raids of the pirates Saracens, that saw Nerano protagonist of the sack on the 13th of june of the 1558 for hand of Pialì Pasha. The Turkish army disembarked on marinade with 2000 men, while the fleet of 120 ships moved in to the harbour of Naples; the population scared from the ships escaped towards the hill, but it found the pirates you that in the meantime had reached Nerano. Dreadful crimes were done, culminated with the deportation of approximately 1500 citizens towards Constantinople.
In the last century, instead, Nerano people have lived during the period of the two world wars, the drama of the hardships and the hunger; moreover in this period there was the opening of the quarry of the bay of Jeranto, where many found job and therefore the arrival and successive integration of various miners from the Sardinia, that have changed with their contribution of uses and customs, the ethnic and folkloristic aspect of the small village.
Today, Nerano is a bathing center, of remarkable importance in peninsula sorrentina and universal, it is known also beyond the national borders, as well as for the beauty of its coasts and its sea, its depths of sea and its submarine coves, for the delicious local dishes, mainly the famous “spaghetti with the courgette”.

Bay of Ieranto, the heart of the marine reservoir Punta Campanella, in front of the island of Capri. The bay of Ieranto is a property of Fai Italy and it is very beautiful and protected from the Ministry of the enviroment.
