Itineraries: Pompei

The consequences of a huge disaster revealed a benefit for the posters: Pompeii’s excavations are a magical place that brings visitors back in the time when everything remained fixed at the August of the year 79 A.C. when Vesuvius erupted. In a moment everything was buried by the fury of the washes, ash and lapillus.
The volcanic materials have allowed the conservation of the city, apart from the ceilings of the buildings.
The structure of the area has changed a lot with respect to the classic age as the sea has gone back to some kilometres of distance.
Pompeii was built around the VI century B. C. under the influence of the dominant populations: Greeks, Etruschi, Sanniti.
Afterwards the city belonged to Rome as Silla transformed it in a roman colony.
It has an elliptic form; their main characteristic is a road, that divides the city in two parts. Two decumans perpendicular to the road divide the city in the western zone, comprising the forum and most of the public buildings, and the eastern zone, with the amphitheatre and a great gymnasium.
The central zone comprises public buildings (barracks of the gladiators, theatre and temple of Isis).
Out of Pompeii’s walls, several residential buildings rose, like the Villa of the mysteries. They fascinate the visitor with several rooms with balconies, shops and decorations, partially left on the spot, in other cases brought to National the Archaeological Museum of Naples for their value or their fragility.
Several rooms have preserved almost perfectly their frescos that represent mythological histories, perspective architectonic and landscapes that testify the roman painting of that age.
