Itineraries: Massa Lubrense

The first inhabitants of the zone were two italic populations, the Ausoni and the Osci of which it is given testimony in an inscription discovered a few years ago near the landing place oriental of Punta Campanella.
Successively it became a Greek colony that gave the name of the temple, “Athenaion” to all this extreme part of the peninsula.
In the roman age it conserved Hellenistic characters and it was named “Promontorium Minervae”, name that appears on the “Tabula Peutingeriana” (sec.IV) beside the first graphical picture of the temple.
In the Middle Ages the first residential nucleus rose that created the “country houses” then called villages, and finally portions.
The name of “Mass” appears after the short domination from Longobardi (sec. VI) from “mansa”, that indicated a place used to cultivate.
The name of Mass was joined with the adjective “public” to mean a state property.
The attribute “lubrensis”, own of the episcopate one, replaced that of “publica”, meaning Lobra, (delubrum = temple), cathedral church that rose on the beach of Fontanelle.
Massa Lubrense then took part of the Ducato di Sorrento acquiring great autonomy under the Svevi.
In 1465 the main country house was destroyed, that of the Annunziata, center of the Bishop and of the civil authority, the only one fortified with towers and walls, to work of Ferrante d’Aragona.
During the Spanish kingdom, Massa Lubrense crossed a period of negative political events and endured invasions of Turkish pirates.
The citizen constructed along the coast various towers of sight in order to defend itself from the enemy incursions, today they are still visible and in discreet state of conservation, constituting a peculiarity of the coast.
