Itineraries: Ercolano

Ercolano shared with Pompeii the same destiny. It is concealed by the modern architectures of the new Ercolano, known until some time ago like Resin.
Brought back to light in the 18th century, along with Pompeii, it has revealed its purely residential character, influenced from the near cities of Naples, Cumae and Pompeii.
It was covered by lava and mud that sheltered it entirely saving almost intact houses, ceilings and furniture.
It was famous above all for its wine Vesvinum or Vesuvinum.
The street system is orthogonal and characterized by thistles and decumans crossing each other, with the presence of private domus (houses) public buildings and insulae residences.
The roads are paved with stone slabs.
The city appears richer and refined than Pompeii: the elegant houses present the classic form closed towards outside and articulated inside around to a peristyle, the less elegant houses are like block of flats with a narrow central courtyard.
The most famous houses are: the house to Graticcio, the house of the Relief of Telefo, the house of the Entrance hall with the Mosaic, that of the skeleton and Villa of the Papyruses, partially discovered.
This last one has revealed many treasures, that are today in the National Archaeological Museum, and an area in front of the sea of approximately 250 meters where a splendid landscape could be admired.
